CHAPTER TEN

Present Day

Nana looked to Lance. “You can take your fingers out of your ears now.”

“This kissing part is over?”

“For now.”

“You mean there’s more?” He groaned with the question, as if this was too much romance to endure.

“Nana, I like Millie best,” Lily said, ignoring her brother. “And Peter seems to like her best, too.”

Nana squeezed her granddaughter’s shoulder. “Millie is a good person who’s down on her luck. Getting that barmaid job made a tremendous difference to her entire future.”

“Is that because Peter falls in love with her?”

“No, no, please,” Lance insisted. “Nana, please!”

“I gave you fair warning, Lance, and I will again if it’s necessary.”

“So, they do kiss again?” Lily gleefully clapped her hands.

“They do,” Nana said, “again that very night.”

Lance groaned, sank down on the sofa, and placed his hands over his ears. “I don’t want to hear it,” he said, sounding annoyed.

Nana had trouble holding back a smile.

Undeterred by her brother’s attitude, Lily tugged on Nana’s sleeve. “I bet it happened when Peter drives Millie home from work that night.”

Her granddaughter had a romantic heart. “You’re right. Millie worked hard to prove herself because she badly needed that job.”

“And she didn’t want to go back to that awful place where she worked before, right?”

“Right. She was grateful to Peter for helping convince Hank to let her keep the job.”

“She kissed him first, though?”

“Yup, and then he kissed her again and again and told her how much he liked her. That was the night he told her that he hoped at the end of the week, she would be willing to date him.”

“Nana.” Lance groaned in protest, removing his hands from the side of his head. “This isn’t the way the story is supposed to go.”

“Why not?”

“It’s getting mushy. I want to hear more about the bikers.”

“I’ll get back to them in a little bit. Okay?”

Heaving an exasperated sigh, he continued, “All right, but I don’t want to hear about any more kissing.”

“For now,” Nana promised.

Lily was having none of it; she longed for more details. “So, what happened after Peter kissed Millie?”

“Well, Peter was so happy that the next morning he called his sister and told Grace Ann all about Millie and that he intended to date her.”

Lily frowned. “I’m not sure I like Grace Ann. She’s too…fussy.”

“That she was,” Nana agreed, “but you wait, she eventually comes around.”

Lily looked skeptical, as if she wasn’t sure Grace Ann could change. “What did she say when Peter told her he was going to date Millie?”

“She didn’t think it was a good idea, did she?” Lance asked, fidgeting. “How much longer before the bikers come back?”

“Not long, I promise, and Lance, you’re right about Grace Ann.”

“Did she pretend to be happy for him?”

“Not in the least. Actually, she said very little, but Peter got her message. He didn’t care though, he was smitten.”

“What’s smitten?” Lance asked, cocking his head to one side.

“I bet it means he likes Millie,” Lily explained to her brother.

Lance scooted down and covered his ears again.
